Technical Workshop on data management for sustainable tourism: Moving towards a Network of Tourism Observatories for a better governance in the Mediterranean

The online workshop on Data Management for sustainable tourism -first technical event organized by BEST MED Project (Interreg MED Programme)- was an opportunity to analyse and compare management models of existing Tourism Observatories in the Mediterranean area at national, regional and local level. It was focused on exchanging about existing standards on data management for tourism, especially on official statistics (Eurostat System), and studying the big data for tourism management together with the use of sustainability indicators.

The seminar was aimed at developing a new integrated and sustainable tourism planning with the scope of mitigating seasonality in the Mediterranean area based on a participatory approach. Building on the model developed by BEST MED Project, the key actors engaged in data collection and analysis gathered on that occasion ideas and proposals to define priorities and operational aspects of the NSTO.

Policy Conference Best MED NSTO and DestiMED PLUS Project

BEST MED and DestiMED PLUS (both Interreg MED Programme projects) organised a joint event to reflect on the implementation and governance of the Mediterranean Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (NSTO) and on the approval of a Mediterranean Ecotourism Policy Roadmap by public authorities and notably European institutions.
This Policy Conference gathered key tourism actors from the private and public sectors and high-level participants from EU tourism organizations and European institutions related addressing the digital and green transition of the tourism ecosystem.
The members of the NSTO discussed their needs in terms of data collection, identification, analysis, and use and presented the NSTO as a tool for the regional policy makers in planning their tourism activities to walk towards a more sustainable and respectful with the territories and population sector.
The green transition was also addressed through the promotion of the governance of ecotourism and the integration of conservation and tourism policies in the Mediterranean territories. Moreover, a presentation of a Mediterranean Ecotourism Policy roadmap prepared by the Mediterranean Ecotourism took place.
